A fortress mentioned as early as the 11th century by Samuel ibn Naghrela, poet at the court of the taifa of Granada, and raised in its present form in the 14th century against the Castilian advance. Its keep is one of the widest in al-Andalus. It fell in 1410 after a five-month siege.
