Bishop fray Diego Fernández de Villalán ordered it built in 1524, after the earthquake of 1522 that destroyed the earlier cathedral; its design, presumably by Diego de Siloé, gave it battlements, towers and a flat roof for guns against Barbary pirates and rebel Moriscos. From 1555 Juan de Orea made the choir, the sacristy and the main portal (1567), and the bell tower was finished in 1613. Today the Diocesan Museum fills the towers and the bell tower has been open to the public since 2023.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
