Astorga

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
A marquisate and episcopal see on the Camino de Santiago

In 1465 Henry IV granted Álvaro Pérez Osorio the title of marquis of Astorga, and the city passed from a free town to a feudal one. It sided with the king in the war of the Comuneros (1520 to 1521), and in 1545 the printing press arrived with Agustín de Paz. Of its tradition of welcoming pilgrims the hospitals of San Juan Bautista and of the Cinco Llagas remain; on 2 May 1808 it was among the first cities to rise against the French.
