Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Becerreá

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Crossing of the royal road from Madrid to A Coruña, with the Cruzul bridge

Becerreá, in the Lugo mountains, was a stage on the only route of communication with the plateau, the Via XIX linking Braga and Astorga. A decree of Charles III in 1761 set out the network of royal roads, among them the one from Madrid to Galicia, and the Cruzul bridge, built from 1776 to the end of the 18th century, carried it over the River Narón. In 1809 local guerrillas seized more than a thousand rifles that the French had hidden beside the bridge.
