The fortress begun in 1706 on an islet at the end of La Caleta beach, to defend the north flank of the city. The islet had earlier, from 1457, a chapel raised by the crew of a Venetian ship. A causeway of 1860 joins it to the city, the present iron lighthouse dates from 1908 and inside there is a marine research laboratory of the University of Cádiz.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
