A pentagonal fortress of Italian influence, with star-like points running out into the sea. After the Anglo-Dutch assault of 1596, Philip II commissioned Cristóbal de Rojas to build it by royal decree of 25 October 1597; the engineer died before finishing it and the work was less ambitious than the plan. The chapel and sacristy date from 1693, from 1769 it was a military prison, the Ministry of Defence stopped using it in 1991 and today it holds cultural events.
