It was the cathedral of Cádiz until 1838 and is now a parish church. Alfonso X ordered a church built around 1262 on a mosque; the Anglo-Dutch fire of 1596 left it almost destroyed, and what stands is the reconstruction commissioned in 1597 and consecrated in 1602, Mannerist and Baroque, with three aisles and a dome on pendentives. The freestanding bell tower, with a tiled spire, dates from the 15th century.
