The collegiate church rose from 1120 on the site of the main mosque and was rebuilt in Mudéjar style in the late 14th and early 15th centuries; the cloister and the lower parts of the apse and the tower survive from then. In the 16th century the alabaster portal was added, contracted on 5 February 1525 with Juan de Talavera and Esteban de Obray and finished in 1528, and at the end of that century the chapter began a new church in the Escorial manner; the bulbous spire of the tower dates from 1775. After the structural damage of 2010 it was reopened on 9 May 2022.
