The convent of the Discalced Mercedarians, founded in 1613 with a bequest from Andrés Lozano, a captain in the American colonies; work began in 1621 and the first stone was laid in 1622. It keeps the Baroque cloister, with barrel-vaulted galleries, though its upper level was remodelled in the 19th century, and a classicist façade of Tuscan pilasters. Emptied in 1835 by the Mendizábal confiscation laws, it was a secondary school from 1843 to 1995 and has been a museum since 2005; the church, now separate, is still used for worship.
