The rectangular fortress that already stood in the year 1200 and that Charles V enlarged with a large artillery platform, to which the present façade is due; the building as it stands is of the 16th century. It served as barracks and as the residence of the governor of the garrison town, housed the Spanish royal family in 1660 and was badly damaged by French troops in 1794. In ruins at the start of the 20th century, it was rehabilitated in 1968 as a Parador Nacional, with some changes to the main façade.
