Years
1492–1833
Role
Exempt villa of the Order of Alcántara

It was an exempt villa of the Order of Alcántara from 1341, and at the end of the 15th century the last master, Juan de Zúñiga y Pimentel, set up the Academia del Maestre there, directed by Antonio de Nebrija. After backing the royalist side in the War of the Comunidades, Charles I gave it his arms as its shield, and in 1591 the partido of Gata was created. In the Peninsular War it stood out for its defence against the French.

To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
