The Spanish reworked the Nasrid alcazaba to withstand gunpowder artillery: the work began in 1492 and was mostly finished around 1589. It left the rounded Torre del Cubo, built around a Nasrid tower, the bastion that strengthens the Torre de la Pólvora, and the brick rampart with curved battlements over the filled-in ditch, probably of 1550 to 1555, which gave the fortress its present form.
