The esplanade in front of the Puerta de Elvira changed in 1612: its three barbicans were demolished, the ground was levelled and twelve houses were built against the wall, which have come down to today almost unchanged. The gate is older, of Zirid origin in the 11th century and remade as a fortress under Yusuf I; its Nasrid outer arch survives, flanked by two rammed-earth towers.
