Role
Seafaring town on the Guipúzcoa coast

A seafaring town founded by Sancho VI of Navarre between 1180 and 1194, it sided with the Comuneros in 1520 and the royal army overcame its resistance in 1521. On 5 January 1597 a fire reduced two thirds of the buildings, some 150 houses, to ashes, and in July 1638 the town withstood the attack of the French fleet. In 1811 the French took it and left in 1813 after causing great damage.
