The church of the barefoot Mercedarian convent that Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, Duke of Medina Sidonia, founded in 1605 over a chapel of San Roque. The earthquakes of 1755 and 1765 damaged it badly and it was rebuilt in Baroque style to a design by Pedro de Silva, under Ambrosio de Figueroa and, from 1775, Francisco Díaz Pinto; the work ran well into the 19th century and the provincial council finished the restoration in 1877. It has been a cathedral since 15 March 1954, and the belfry gables on the façade date from 1915.
