The Franciscan friary where Columbus found refuge and care while preparing his project, with rooms built in the early 15th century and a Mudéjar cloister of the 15th. In the 17th century a battlemented upper floor was added to the cloister as a defence against pirates and the chapter room was rebuilt; the friary was altered most after the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. A permanent exhibition of models of the three caravels is on that upper floor.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
