Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Ispáster

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Farming anteiglesia on the Vizcayan coast

An anteiglesia whose inhabitants worked mainly in farming and stock-raising and, to a lesser extent, in fishing, tied to the town of Lequeitio. The introduction of maize growing in the first decades of the 17th century (the first record in Ispáster is of 1614) brought a boom in milling, with four mills in the 1630s and the Aixeder windmill, of 1728 to 1729, which is still standing. It had sided with the Oñacino party in the feuding wars, which the Catholic Monarchs brought to an end around 1492.
