The Charterhouse of Santa María de la Defensión, late Gothic in origin: its site by the Guadalete was chosen in 1475. It has a Renaissance gateway dated 1571 by Andrés de Ribera and a Baroque church façade built between 1662 and 1667 to designs by Brother Pedro del Piñar. The friars left in 1835, a Carthusian community lived here again from 1948 to 2001 and the last Bethlehem nuns left in 2024.

To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
