Habsburg and Bourbon Spain
Mahón
Today: Spain
- Years
- 1802–1833
- Role
- Capital of Menorca and naval port
Captured by the British in 1708 and ceded at Utrecht, Mahón was for seventy years a British dependency and a naval base in the Mediterranean, and it became the capital of the island in place of Ciudadela; British influence can be seen in its architecture. Menorca was handed over to Spain, finally and permanently, by the Treaty of Amiens in 1802. Mahón's maritime strength continued through the first years of the 19th century.
