The sanctuary stands where King Ferdinand the Catholic had his camp during the siege of 1487; the Minim friars, who took over the chapel in 1493, built a convent and a church beside it, of which only some remains survive. The present church was built from scratch between 1693 and 1700 and holds the image of the city's patron saint in a Baroque camarín, as well as the crypt of the counts of Buenavista, opened to the public after restoration finished in 2024.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
