The fort that Juan Martín Zermeño built between 1735 and 1736 to defend Melilla from the Altura del Cubo. In the 19th century it served as a prison (the liberals José María Calatrava and Francisco Sánchez Barbero were confined there during the absolutist decade) and it was a civil jail from 1919 until 1996. Rehabilitated between 2013 and 2015, with later additions removed, it reopened to the public on 30 March 2015.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
