The citadel that Pedro de Estopiñán took for the Crown of Castile on 17 September 1497, when its defences lay in ruins, and which was built up in four enclosures. The first, on the rock, went up between 1497 and 1556; the second, third and fourth were added in the 17th and 18th centuries, with bastions, ditches and underground galleries. Heavily restored, it can be walked today, with its museums and its walls above the sea.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
