The church raised in the 16th century on the site of a smaller Romanesque one, pulled down early in the 15th, and financed in large part by the Guild of Seamen with baskets of fish. The Plateresque façade, shaped like a stone altarpiece, was finished in 1541, the last interior vault was closed in 1559 and Mateo López added the tower in 1605. It has been a basilica since 1962 and is regarded as the city's cathedral, though the city is not a bishop's seat.
