The Benedictine monastery of Liébana, which keeps the lignum crucis and is a pilgrimage goal; its Gothic church was begun in 1256 and has been remodelled several times. From the 17th century is the cloister, completed then, and from 1705 the Baroque chapel of the lignum crucis, which Pedro Martínez de Cardeña designed. The community left the monastery in 1837, after the disentailment, and a Franciscan fraternity has lived there since 1961.
