The first military arsenal of its kind created in Spain, on a muddy islet north of the Isla de León. Work began in 1752 by royal order of Fernando VI to a design by Jorge Juan, and Antonio Valdés finished it under Carlos III and Carlos IV; the main docks date from 1784 to 1788. It keeps the Penal de las Cuatro Torres, where Francisco de Miranda died in 1816, and the docks and quays where the training ship Juan Sebastián Elcano berths.
