Habsburg and Bourbon Spain
Real Sitio de San Ildefonso
Today: Spain
- Years
- 1721–1833
- Role
- Felipe V's summer royal site
From 1477 the Hieronymites kept a guesthouse and a farm here, the granja that gave the place its name. Felipe V chose the spot, beside the Valsaín hunting ground, for the palace he began in 1721, and the Royal Glass Factory was founded in 1727. The town grew as the palace needed more staff; Carlos III replanned it and gave it a wall, and the treaties of San Ildefonso of 1777, 1796 and 1800 were signed here.
