The cathedral was begun in the 13th century against the town wall and consecrated in 1534. Between 1791 and 1795 it was lined and renewed to a design by Vicente Gascó Masot, which hid almost all the Gothic work. From the medieval church remain the cloister, the bell tower and the rib vaults of the chapels, concealed beneath the Neoclassical lining.
