Role
Provincial capital and archiepiscopal see

Capital of the province and archiepiscopal see, a fortress town from the War of the Reapers until the middle of the 19th century. It suffered sieges in 1641 and 1644, the War of the Spanish Succession and, in 1811, assault by the French army. In 1786 it was allowed to trade freely with America, and the archbishops of the 16th century gave it a Literary University and paid for chapels in the cathedral.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
