The mother house of the Order of Santiago, whose present monastery began to be built on 7 May 1529 with the Plateresque east wing, on plans by Enrique Egas. The Herrerian-style church was finished between 1598 and 1602 and earned the name «Escorial de la Mancha»; the Churrigueresque south front, attributed to Pedro de Ribera, dates from 1735. It lost the spires of two towers in the fires of 1845 and 1877, and was a minor seminary until 2012.
