It replaced the old Gothic collegiate church, badly damaged by the explosion of a powder magazine in 1809. Melchor de Prado y Mariño presented the neoclassical design in 1811, work began in 1816, after the war against the French, and was completed in 1838 (other sources give 1834); only the towers are Baroque. It has been the co-cathedral of the diocese of Tuy-Vigo since 1959 and a basilica since 2020.
