The Cluniac abbey became a collegiate church of canons in 1529, at the urging of the viceroy of Naples, Pedro de Toledo, and was rebuilt with monumental pretensions in the manner of the great Roman basilicas of the Renaissance. It is a 16th-century work finished some two hundred years later, a hall church with three aisles: five bays were planned and the last two were never built. Since the end of the 19th century it has been the parish church of the Asunción.
