Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Vinaroz

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Port town from 1540

Vinaroz received the title of villa in 1540 for siding with the Crown in the Germanías. Its port, with large shipyards, saw most of the more than 15,000 Moriscos expelled from the kingdom embark in 1609, and for centuries it suffered Barbary raids. The fortified church of the Asunción, begun in 1586, has a Baroque doorway contracted in 1698.
