Vivero
Today: Spain
- Years
- 1492–1833
- Role
- Walled port town with the Gate of Charles V
In the early modern period Vivero was a wealthy town, with flax growing, linen weaving, vineyards and a trading port that reached its peak in the 16th century. After the serious fire of September 1540, Charles I exempted it from taxes for three years, and in 1548 the Puerta del Castillo del Puente began to be built in his honour. On 18 February 1809 French troops attacked the town through the Santo Domingo gate and the Castillo del Puente gate.
