Roman Hispania

Veleia

Today: Iruña de Oca, Spain

Years
14–409

The chief town of the Caristii, in a meander of the Zadorra ten kilometres west of Vitoria, on the road from Astorga to Bordeaux. The first Roman changes come under Tiberius, the huts give way to Roman houses in the first half of the 1st century, and the Flavian period is its height. At the end of the 3rd century or the start of the 4th the wall enclosing ten hectares went up, and around the year 400 the Notitia Dignitatum places a cohort here.
