Visigothic kingdom

San Pedro de Rocas

Today: Esgos, Spain

Years
585–711

A complex cut into the rock of Mount Barbeirón, in the Ribeira Sacra of Ourense, held to be the oldest monastery in Galicia. It began in the Suebic kingdom: an inscription of 573, now in the provincial archaeological museum of Ourense, names five of its monks, and it is linked to Martin of Braga. It passed into the Visigothic kingdom with the rest of the northwest in 585 and was abandoned early in the 8th century; in the 9th it became a monastery again, and stayed one until the 19th.

To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one.
