Vega del Mar

Today: San Pedro Alcántara (Marbella), Spain

Years
409–711
Role
Coastal basilica and cemetery

A spot beside the mouth of the Guadalmina, west of San Pedro Alcántara, where the Roman coast road between Gades and Malaca is thought to have run. A basilica was raised here with a cemetery of more than a hundred and eighty graves, in use from the 4th century to the 7th. José Pérez de Barradas, who excavated it from 1930, took it for the road station of Cilniana, but there is no firm proof of that. In the mid 6th century the coast of Malaca passed to the Byzantine province of Spania, whose exact extent is unknown, and the Visigoths did not wholly win it back until Suintila.
