The residence of the archbishops of Toledo, a fortified palace begun in the 13th century. In 1524 Archbishop Fonseca commissioned Alonso de Covarrubias to build the west wing, with its courtyards and staircase, which Cardinal Tavera finished in 1545. A fire on 11 August 1939 destroyed two thirds of the building, Covarrubias's courtyards and staircase among them; the Renaissance main façade remains.
