Years

Role
Cisneros's university city

Cardinal Cisneros founded the University of Alcalá here in 1499, and in 1509 gave the town its new charter. In the Comunero revolt it sided with the rebels, who governed it in 1520 and 1521, and Miguel de Cervantes was baptised here on 9 October 1547. Carlos II made it a city in 1687, and in 1836 the university moved to Madrid.

To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
