A bastioned fort on the border with Portugal. A first earth fort, begun on 8 December 1663 in the Portuguese Restoration War, was ordered demolished in 1664; the present one was designed by Pedro Moreau and built from 1 May 1736 to 1758. In 1810 British troops blew it up in part. It was restored between 2006 and 2012 and served as a hotel; it is one of the few fortresses on the Peninsula in private hands.
