- Role
- Commercial and convent city
After the conquest of Granada in 1492 the city began to spread beyond its walls, and in 1500 the Catholic Monarchs authorized the monastery of San Zoilo and founded the Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor. In the 18th century many religious congregations settled there until it became a convent city, with great textile activity: in 1765 the wool, cloth and baize factory received the title of Royal. Around 1755 it had 87 textile manufacturers with 147 looms.
