The palace Felipe II commissioned from Juan Bautista de Toledo and Juan de Herrera, built from 1565 to 1586 and then left unfinished through the 17th century. Felipe V resumed work from 1715 to 1733, Fernando VI completed the central front in 1750 and 1751, and Sabatini added the two wings enclosing the forecourt between 1771 and 1778. Open to the public since 1931, its royal rooms and its gardens by the Tagus can be visited.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
