The fortress on Montjuïc hill, which began in 1640 as an earth fort during the revolt against Philip IV and became a castle in 1694. In 1751 the engineer Juan Martín Cermeño had the old fort pulled down and gave the complex its shape, with cisterns and a moat, and the works of 1779 to 1799 gave it its present form. It was a military prison until 1960 and is now run by the city council; the Montjuïc cable car rises near its entrance.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
