Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Barcelona

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Capital of the Principality of Catalonia, seat of the viceroy until 1716 and then of the captain general, with the Real Audiencia, and from 1833 capital of the province of the same name.

With the union of Castile and Aragon under the Catholic Monarchs, Barcelona lost the primacy it had held in the Middle Ages, as the court moved away and the Principality came under a viceroy. The Generalitat, the Corts and the Consell de Cent were abolished by the Nueva Planta decree of 1716, and in 1833 the new division into provinces made it capital of the province of Barcelona.
