Bayona

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Port town where the Pinta put in in 1493

By a privilege of Juan II, Bayona and A Coruña were the only Galician ports allowed to trade with foreign countries, and that monopoly held back the growth of Vigo in the 15th century. On 1 March 1493 the caravel La Pinta put in on its coast, and the town was the first in Europe to learn of the discovery of America. At the end of the 16th century the fortress of Monterreal was given bastions, but in time the port of Vigo took its importance.
