The main church, a collegiate church and, until the Concordat of 1851, a co-cathedral of the diocese of Guadix, was begun in 1529 in the Gothic style over the remains of the great mosque. An earthquake in 1531 brought most of it down, except the head, and the chapter commissioned the Renaissance rebuilding from Alonso de Covarrubias and Rodrigo de Gibaja, who finished it in 1549. The three upper stages of the tower are from a restoration of the second half of the 18th century, after another earthquake.
