Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Fortified town on the Portuguese border

A town near the border, it suffered the Portuguese attacks of the Restoration War in the 17th century, and that war is why it was fortified with the Fuerte de San Carlos. In 1711, during the War of the Spanish Succession, Portuguese troops took it; Felipe V's troops recovered it and the Portuguese besieged it in 1712. On 30 May 1813 the Duke of Wellington temporarily set up his headquarters here.
