A bastioned fort of rectangular plan, with diamond-point towers at the corners and a moat, raised as part of the defence of the Portuguese border. Written sources say it was begun in the early 17th century and reformed or finished in 1702, though another passage makes it the work of Felipe IV in the middle of that century; the plans of Robelín (1721) and Moreau (1739) give the names of its bastions. Today it is a ruin, partly consolidated: excavation has uncovered the moat with its well, the glacis, the covered way, the access bridge and the Portugal and San Amaro bastions.
