Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Cardona

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Fortress town of the duchy of Cardona

Cardona was raised to a duchy in 1491, and in 1575 the Cardona estate passed to Joana II, married to the marquis of Comares. In the War of the Spanish Succession its fortress was the Catalan stronghold that held out longest against the Bourbon army, until it capitulated on 18 September 1714, a week after the fall of Barcelona. Napoleon's troops could not take its citadel in 1810.
