The cathedral that Juan de Ochoa designed at the end of the 17th century on the site of the old great mosque, which had become a church after the Portuguese conquest of 1415. Work began in 1686 and it was not consecrated until 1726, because of the siege the city was under. In 1954 and 1955 the east end was transformed and the two façade towers were raised; it keeps the chapel of the Santísimo with frescoes by Miguel Bernardini.
