Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Ceuta

Today: Spain

Years
1640–1833
Role
Spanish fortress town on the African coast

Ceuta, Portuguese since 1415, did not follow Portugal in its secession of 1640 and stayed under the sovereignty of Philip IV; the Treaty of Lisbon of 1668 recognised Spanish sovereignty. It withstood the Moroccan sultan's siege between 1694 and 1724 and those of 1732, 1757 and 1790 to 1791. From these years survive the cathedral, begun in 1686, and the Royal Walls.

To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
